What is GKS (Global Korea Scholarship)?
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), formerly known as the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), is the Korean government’s flagship fully-funded scholarship for international students. Administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Korean Ministry of Education, GKS is one of the most generous scholarships available to Indian students.
GKS covers everything — tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, round-trip airfare, medical insurance, a settlement allowance, and even 1 year of Korean language training before your degree program begins. There is zero financial obligation on the student.
The scholarship is open to citizens of over 160 countries, including India, and is available for:
- Undergraduate programs — 4-year degree (plus 1-year language training = 5 years total)
- Master’s programs — 2-year degree (plus 1-year language training = 3 years total)
- PhD programs — 3-year degree (plus 1-year language training = 4 years total)
- Combined Master’s + PhD — 5-year degree (plus 1-year language training = 6 years total)
Why is GKS So Popular Among Indian Students?
India has seen a surge in GKS applications over the past few years, driven by the growing demand for Korean language professionals, Korea’s world-class education system, and the scholarship’s exceptional financial coverage. Unlike most scholarships that cover only tuition, GKS covers every aspect of studying and living in Korea — making it truly accessible regardless of financial background.
GKS 2026 Key Dates & Timeline for Indian Students
GKS operates on an annual cycle. Here is the typical timeline for the 2026 intake. Note that exact dates vary slightly each year — always check the official NIIED website at studyinkorea.go.kr for final dates.
| Phase | Timeline | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Application Opens | Feb – Mar 2026 | NIIED releases application guidelines; Korean Embassy in India opens applications |
| Embassy Track Deadline | Mar – Apr 2026 | Submit documents to Korean Embassy in New Delhi |
| University Track Deadline | Varies by university | Apply directly to your chosen Korean university |
| 1st Screening Results | May – Jun 2026 | Document evaluation — shortlisted candidates announced |
| 2nd Screening (Interview) | Jun – Jul 2026 | In-person or online interview at Korean Embassy |
| Final Results | Jul – Aug 2026 | NIIED announces final selected scholars |
| Arrival in Korea | Aug – Sep 2026 | Travel to Korea, orientation at designated university |

Important: GKS has two application tracks — the Embassy Track (apply through the Korean Embassy in India) and the University Track (apply directly to a Korean university). You can only apply through one track per cycle, not both.
GKS Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students
Before you start your application, make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements:
- Age: Under 25 years old (undergraduate) or under 40 years old (graduate) as of March 1, 2026
- Education: Completed or completing 12th grade (undergraduate) or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree (graduate programs)
- GPA: Minimum 80% or equivalent (CGPA 8.0/10) in your most recent degree
- Nationality: Indian citizen — both applicant and parents must be non-Korean nationals
- Health: Physically and mentally fit (medical certificate required)
- Previous GKS: Must not have previously received GKS/KGSP scholarship
- Field of study: No restrictions — you can apply for any field offered by your chosen university
- Korean language: TOPIK is not mandatory, but Level 3+ gives 10 bonus selection points
Pro tip: While the minimum GPA requirement is 80%, competitive applicants typically have 85%+ or equivalent. If your GPA is on the lower side, strengthen other parts of your application (personal statement, TOPIK, extracurriculars).
GKS Application Process — Step by Step
The GKS application process involves multiple stages. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:
- Choose your application track. Decide between the Embassy Track (apply via the Korean Embassy in New Delhi) or the University Track (apply directly to a Korean university). Research which track has historically been more successful for Indian applicants in your field.
- Select up to 3 universities. You can list up to 3 Korean universities in order of preference. Choose a mix — one reach (top-tier), one match, and one safe option.
- Prepare all required documents. This is the most time-consuming step. Start at least 2–3 months before the deadline. See the full document checklist in the next section.
- Submit your application. For Embassy Track: submit physical documents to the Korean Embassy in New Delhi. For University Track: submit online + physical copies to your chosen university.
- 1st Screening — Document Evaluation. NIIED and/or the university evaluates your academic records, personal statement, study plan, and recommendation letters.
- 2nd Screening — Interview. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed (in-person at the Korean Embassy or via video call). Questions focus on your motivation, study plan, and knowledge of Korea.
- Final Selection by NIIED. NIIED makes the final decision and announces selected scholars. You’ll receive an official acceptance letter.
- Visa and travel arrangements. Apply for a D-2 student visa at the Korean Embassy, book flights, and prepare for your move to Korea.
Required Documents for GKS Application
Document preparation is the most critical part of your GKS application. Here’s the complete checklist:
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Application Form | NIIED standard format — download from studyinkorea.go.kr |
| Personal Statement | 2–3 pages: why Korea, your goals, why you deserve GKS, your connection to Korean culture/language |
| Study Plan | 2–3 pages: your academic/research plan, how it aligns with Korea’s strengths, post-graduation goals |
| Recommendation Letters (2) | From professors or employers who know you well. Must be in sealed envelopes with signatures across the seal. |
| Academic Transcripts | All semesters, officially sealed by your institution. Include grading scale explanation. |
| Degree Certificate | Notarized copy. If still studying, provide an expected completion certificate. |
| Passport Copy | Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended arrival date in Korea |
| Language Certificates | TOPIK score report (if available), IELTS/TOEFL (if applying for English-medium programs) |
| Health Certificate | From a government hospital — must confirm you are physically and mentally fit |
| Proof of Nationality | For applicant AND both parents (Aadhaar card, voter ID, or passport copies) |
Critical tip: The personal statement and study plan are where most Indian applicants lose points. Be specific — don’t write generic statements like “I love Korean culture.” Instead, explain exactly what you want to study, why Korea is the best place for it, and how it connects to your career goals.

How to Choose Universities for GKS
You can list up to 3 universities in your GKS application. Choosing the right universities is crucial. Here’s how to make smart choices:
- Research faculty and programs: Look for professors whose research aligns with your interests. Read their publications and mention them in your study plan.
- Check rankings: Use QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education (THE) to evaluate your options. Korean universities like Seoul National, KAIST, and POSTECH are globally ranked.
- Consider location: Seoul universities offer more networking and part-time work opportunities, but regional universities may have less competition for GKS slots and lower living costs.
- English vs Korean medium: If you don’t have TOPIK, prioritize universities that offer your program in English. Many top universities offer English-taught graduate programs.
Top GKS-Popular Korean Universities
These universities are frequently chosen by GKS scholars and have strong international student support:
- Seoul National University (SNU) — Korea’s #1 university, highly competitive
- Korea University — Strong in business, law, and social sciences
- Yonsei University — Excellent international programs, beautiful campus
- KAIST — Korea’s MIT, best for STEM fields
- Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) — Samsung-backed, strong engineering and business
- Hanyang University — Top-ranked for engineering and architecture
- Kyung Hee University — Popular for Korean language/culture and hospitality
- Chung-Ang University — Strong in arts, media, and performing arts
Strategy: Apply to a balanced mix — 1 reach school (top-tier, highly competitive), 1 match school (good fit for your profile), and 1 safe school (regional university with less competition). This maximizes your chances of selection.
Tips to Strengthen Your GKS Application
Competition for GKS from India is intense. Here are proven strategies to make your application stand out:
- Start early — at least 6 months before the deadline. Document gathering, translations, notarizations, and recommendation letters all take time. Rushing leads to weak applications.
- Get TOPIK Level 3 or above. This gives you 10 bonus selection points — a massive advantage in a competitive pool. Even TOPIK Level 2 demonstrates effort and commitment.
- Write a compelling personal statement. Be specific about your motivations. Mention specific Korean technologies, industries, or academic strengths that attract you. Generic statements get rejected.
- Align your study plan with Korea’s strengths. Korea excels in semiconductors, AI, automotive, K-content, biotech, and green energy. Frame your study plan around areas where Korea leads globally.
- Get strong recommendation letters. Choose recommenders who know you personally and can write detailed, specific letters. A generic “good student” letter won’t help.
- Maintain a high GPA. While 80% is the minimum, aim for 85%+. If your GPA is below 85%, compensate with TOPIK, strong essays, and relevant extracurriculars.
- Highlight extracurriculars and achievements. Publications, research projects, volunteer work, cultural exchange experience, and leadership roles all strengthen your profile.
- Prepare thoroughly for the interview. Research Korea’s education system, your chosen university, and your professor’s work. Practice answering questions about your study plan and post-graduation goals in a clear, confident manner.

Get GKS Guidance →GKS and TOPIK — How Korean Language Helps
While TOPIK is not mandatory for GKS, having Korean language skills gives you a significant edge:
- TOPIK Level 3+ earns you 10 additional selection points in the GKS scoring system. In a competitive applicant pool where 1–2 points can make the difference, this is a massive advantage.
- GKS includes 1-year language training, but having TOPIK before you apply shows the selection committee that you’re serious about studying in Korea and adapting to Korean academic life.
- TOPIK Level 4+ is required for Korean-medium courses at most universities. If you already have this level, you may be able to skip or reduce the language training year and start your degree sooner.
- During the interview, being able to introduce yourself or answer basic questions in Korean leaves a strong impression on the evaluators.
