What is TOPIK?
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is the standardized Korean language proficiency exam administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Korean Ministry of Education. It is the only officially recognized Korean language certification worldwide.
TOPIK is divided into two papers:
- TOPIK I — Tests Levels 1 and 2 (Beginner). Consists of Listening and Reading sections. Duration: 100 minutes.
- TOPIK II — Tests Levels 3 through 6 (Intermediate to Advanced). Consists of Listening, Writing, and Reading sections. Duration: 180 minutes.
Your level is determined by your total score, not by which paper you choose. TOPIK I can award Level 1 or 2; TOPIK II can award Levels 3, 4, 5, or 6 based on your performance.
Who Should Take TOPIK?
TOPIK is essential for anyone who wants to:
- Study at a Korean university (undergraduate or graduate programs)
- Apply for the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) — TOPIK Level 3+ gives bonus points
- Work at Korean companies in India (Samsung, Hyundai, LG, Kia, POSCO, etc.)
- Pursue a career as a Korean language translator or interpreter
- Apply for a work visa or permanent residency in South Korea

TOPIK Levels Explained
Your TOPIK level depends on your total score. Here’s what each level means:
| Level | Paper | Score Required | Ability Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | TOPIK I | 80+ / 200 | Basic survival Korean — greetings, ordering food, simple shopping |
| Level 2 | TOPIK I | 140+ / 200 | Elementary — handle basic daily situations, use postal services, banking |
| Level 3 | TOPIK II | 120+ / 300 | Intermediate — discuss familiar topics fluently, basic paragraph writing |
| Level 4 | TOPIK II | 150+ / 300 | Upper-Intermediate — discuss social issues, read news articles |
| Level 5 | TOPIK II | 190+ / 300 | Advanced — professional/academic discussions, structured essay writing |
| Level 6 | TOPIK II | 230+ / 300 | Master — near-native fluency, complex research topics, formal writing |
Key insight: You don’t “fail” TOPIK. If you take TOPIK II and score 100/300, you simply don’t receive any level certification. Score 120+ and you get Level 3, 150+ for Level 4, and so on.
Why Take TOPIK? Benefits for Indian Students
A TOPIK certification opens multiple doors for Indian students and professionals:
- GKS Scholarship: The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is Korea’s most prestigious fully-funded scholarship. TOPIK Level 3 or above gives you 10 additional selection points in the scoring system — a significant advantage over applicants without TOPIK.
- Korean University Admission: Most Korean universities require TOPIK Level 3+ for Korean-medium programs and Level 4+ for competitive programs at SKY universities (Seoul National, Korea, Yonsei).
- Jobs at Korean Companies: Companies like Samsung, Hyundai, LG, Kia, and POSCO operating in India actively seek Korean-speaking professionals. TOPIK Level 3+ is typically the minimum requirement.
- Translation & Interpretation Career: Professional Korean translators and interpreters in India earn ₹30,000–80,000/month. TOPIK Level 5+ is the industry benchmark.
- Korean Work Visa (E-7/E-9): TOPIK certification is required for certain Korean work visas and contributes points toward permanent residency (F-2 visa).

Effective TOPIK preparation requires a structured approach. Here are proven strategies from I-KETS instructors who have helped thousands of Indian students crack TOPIK:
- Master Hangul first. Before anything else, learn to read and write the Korean alphabet fluently. This typically takes 1–2 weeks of focused practice.
- Build vocabulary systematically. TOPIK I requires approximately 1,500–2,000 vocabulary words. TOPIK II Level 4+ requires 5,000+. Use flashcards and spaced repetition.
- Focus on grammar patterns. Korean grammar follows predictable patterns. Learn the most frequently tested patterns first — approximately 100 patterns cover 80% of TOPIK questions.
- Practice with past papers. Official past TOPIK papers are available free on topik.go.kr. Do at least 5 full past papers under timed conditions.
- For TOPIK II Writing: Practice the 3 writing tasks separately — sentence completion (작문 Task 51-52), short answer (Task 53), and essay (Task 54). Learn the standard Korean essay structure: 서론 (introduction), 본론 (body), 결론 (conclusion).
- Train your listening speed. TOPIK listening audio plays only once. Practice with Korean podcasts, dramas (without subtitles), and TOPIK listening sample files to build speed.
- Join a structured course. Self-study is possible but a structured course with experienced instructors dramatically improves your chances — especially for the Writing section.
TOPIK and GKS Scholarship — The Connection
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), formerly known as KGSP, is the Korean government’s flagship scholarship for international students. It covers tuition, living allowance, airfare, medical insurance, and Korean language training — making it truly fully-funded.
Here’s how TOPIK directly impacts your GKS application:
- TOPIK Level 3+ gives you 10 additional selection points in the GKS scoring system
- GKS selection is competitive — India receives hundreds of applications for limited seats. Those 10 points can be the difference between selection and rejection.
- Many Indian students take the April TOPIK specifically to have their certificate ready for GKS applications (typically due June–August).
- Even if not required, having TOPIK Level 4+ on your GKS application signals commitment and readiness to study in Korean.
If you’re planning to apply for GKS 2026 or 2027, prioritize taking TOPIK as early as possible.
